Srinagar's Mughal gardens — Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi — were built by emperors who considered Kashmir paradise on earth. A morning shikara ride across Dal Lake, drifting past lotus beds and floating vegetable markets, is an experience that stays long after the trip ends. Gulmarg rises to 2,650 metres and offers India's best high-altitude meadow experience: pony rides across open pastures, the Gondola cable car to Kongdori, and in winter, powder skiing on Affarwat slope.
