Paro's three-night base anchors the close of this eight-night Bhutan route, which starts at the Phuentsholing border and climbs through Thimphu and Punakha. Tashichho Dzong, the Buddha Dordenma, the Chimi Lhakhang temple and the cliff-perched Taktsang monastery give the kingdom run its anchor points across the western valleys.

The Route Through Bhutan

Phuentsholing handles the border arrival, then Thimphu's National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma and Tashichho Dzong fill two valley days. Punakha brings the Chimi Lhakhang temple and the Punakha Dzong at the river fork, and Paro's three nights build toward the Taktsang climb, known as the Tiger's Nest, the Kyichu Lhakhang and the national museum above the town.

Day 2: Phuentsholing — Tashichho Dzong

Today is devoted to Tashichho Dzong. Tashichho Dzong has been serving as the seat of the Bhutanese government since 1952, when King Jigme Dorji Wan. The visit typically takes a few hours and rewards anyone who takes the time to absorb it properly. Return to the hotel for an evening at your own pace.

Day 3: Thimphu — National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma & More

A full day of sightseeing across Thimphu: National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma, Textile Museum and Handicraft Emporium, Simply Bhutan Museum and National Institute of Zorig Chusum. Day 4: Thimphu — Chimi Lhakhang Temple, Punakha Dzong & More

A full day of sightseeing across Thimphu: Chimi Lhakhang Temple, Punakha Dzong and Dochula Pass. Start with Chimi Lhakhang Temple — The Chimi Lhakhang temple is located about 10 km from Punakha, on a hillock down, then work through the remaining stops. It's a packed day, but each attraction adds a distinct layer to your understanding of the region.

Day 5: Punakha — Ringpung Dzong & National Museum of Bhutan

Morning visit to Ringpung Dzong — A fine example of Bhutanese architecture, the Ringpung Dzong is a complex with courtyards, towering . After lunch, move on to National Museum of Bhutan, which rounds off the day's sightseeing with a contrasting experience. Dinner in Punakha before returning to the hotel.

Day 6: Paro — Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) & Kyichu Lhakhang

Morning visit to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) — Perched precariously on the edge of a 1200 m cliff, Taktsang Monastery (also known as Tiger’s Nest) . After lunch, move on to Kyichu Lhakhang, which rounds off the day's sightseeing with a contrasting experience. Dinner in Paro before returning to the hotel.

Today's itinerary takes you through some of Paro's best: the Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), the National Museum of Bhutan, and Rinpung Dzong and the town's traditional market. Each stop adds a different dimension — cultural, natural, or historical — and together they give you a genuine sense of the place. Return to the hotel for dinner and a well-earned rest.

Today's itinerary takes you through some of Paro's best: the Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), the National Museum of Bhutan, and Rinpung Dzong and the town's traditional market. Day 9: Paro — Departure

Check out of the hotel after breakfast and prepare for your departure. Transfer to the airport or railway station with memories of Paro still fresh. The journey home begins, but the trip doesn't really end until you're back at your desk wishing you'd stayed longer.
