Ahmedabad to Polo Forest – (155 kms approx. 3.5 Hrs)

Your journey begins from Ahmedabad as you proceed towards Polo Forest. Upon arrival, check in at the hotel and relax before heading out to explore the natural and historical attractions of this beautiful forest region. Later, visit Harnav Dam, also known as Vanaj Dam, a gated dam built upstream on the Harnav River. Just a few meters away from the dam site, the forest department has constructed the Vanaj Forest Rest House. Together, Harnav Dam and the Vanaj Forest Rest House form an excellent addition to your visit to Polo Forest in the Vijaynagar region.

Continue your exploration with a visit to the Sun Temple, Polo Forest, built in the 14th century. This ancient temple stands as a humble witness to the rise and fall of various dynasties and remains a symbol of the grandeur of the past. The statue of Lord Shiva inside the temple reflects different moods when viewed from various angles, forming the heart and soul of this sacred site. Situated on a low-height hillock, the temple is an excellent example of Nagar Shaily (Nagar style) architecture.

You will also explore Polo Jain Nagri and Bhim Hill, followed by an enriching trekking experience through the forest area. Polo Forest was once part of a vast territory, with Vijaynagar serving as its capital around 600 years ago. The ancient city was an important pilgrimage site for Jains and followers of Shiva. The jungle still has four sculptured gates made from local sedimentary rocks, built in each direction. The city was developed along the banks of the Harnav River, and although many temples were destroyed during the Mughal period, their remains now stand as heritage sites.

The forest is rich in wildlife, including leopards and bears, while spiders and pythons can also be found in the dense jungle. The region is home to more than 600 types of trees. Several species of water birds and crabs inhabit the river and reservoir area. The entire region is maintained as a sanctuary under the Dholwani Range Forest Department. The government has also established a campsite to promote nature education and develop the area as a tourism destination.
