If Europe were a gemstone, Croatia would be a sun-drenched sapphire. Stretching along the Adriatic Sea, this is a country where the water is so clear you can see the shadows of boats on the seafloor, and the limestone cities are so ancient they feel like they’ve grown out of the cliffs themselves.

The journey almost always leads to Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” Walking atop the massive medieval walls that encircle the Old Town, you look out over a sea of terracotta roofs contrasted against the deep, shimmering blue of the sea. It’s a city of marble streets and hidden “hole-in-the-wall” bars perched on the rocks outside the ramparts. But to find the true heart of the coast, you must head to Split. Here, the city isn’t just near a palace—the city is a palace. Diocletian’s Palace, built for a Roman Emperor in the 4th century, is a living labyrinth where people still live, shop, and drink coffee among 1,700-year-old columns.

Away from the stone cities, Croatia’s nature is breathtakingly lush. At Plitvice Lakes National Park, the landscape transforms into a wonderland of 16 terraced lakes connected by a series of cascading waterfalls. Walking along the wooden boardwalks as the turquoise water thunders below you, you feel like you’ve stepped into a world untouched by time.

Then there are the islands. From the glitz and lavender fields of Hvar to the quiet, pine-scented shores of Vis or the “Marco Polo” charm of Korčula, the best way to see Croatia is by boat. Dropping anchor in a secluded bay to swim in the salty Adriatic before enjoying a dinner of “Peka” (meat or octopus slow-cooked under a bell) is the definition of the Mediterranean dream. Croatia doesn’t just offer a vacation; it offers a slower, more beautiful way of life.
