Phuentsholing is the bustling commercial capital of Bhutan and the primary entry point for travelers arriving by road from India. Located directly across the border from Jaigaon, West Bengal, it is a unique “melting pot” where the vibrant energy of India meets the serene, orderly traditions of the Dragon Kingdom.
Bhutan’s “High Value, Low Volume” policy is strictly managed here through a seamless digital and physical process:
The 24-Hour Rule: Indian tourists visiting only the border town of Phuentsholing for less than 24 hours are exempt from the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). You can explore up to the Rinchending Check Post without a permit.
SDF for Overnight Stays: If staying longer than 24 hours or traveling beyond the town, the SDF is ₹1,200 per adult per night. Children (6–12) pay ₹600, and those under 5 are exempt.
Permit Process: You can obtain your Entry Permit at the Phuentsholing Pedestrian Terminal. You must carry an Original Passport (6-month validity) or a Voter ID Card. Note: Aadhaar and PAN cards are not valid for entry.
Vehicle Entry: If driving an Indian-registered vehicle beyond the town, a “Green Tax” of Nu. 4,500 per day applies, and the vehicle must be registered on the Check Post Management System (CPMS).
The Bhutan Gate: The most photographed landmark in town. This beautifully carved traditional gate marks the transition from the chaos of Jaigaon to the quiet, clean streets of Bhutan.
Zangto Pelri Lhakhang: A stunning three-story temple in the heart of the town representing the “Heavenly Abode” of Guru Rinpoche. The surrounding park is a perfect spot for people-watching as locals spin prayer wheels.
Karbandi Monastery (Rinchending Goemba): Located on a hill 4 km above the town, this monastery offers the best panoramic views of the Bengal plains and the Torsa River. It is surrounded by a lush tropical garden and eight distinct Tibetan stupas.
Amo Chhu Crocodile Breeding Centre: A unique conservation site near the river where you can see endangered Gharials and Mugger crocodiles. It’s a fascinating stop, especially during afternoon feeding sessions.
Phuentsholing Market: For an authentic taste of Bhutan, skip the souvenir shops and head to the local market where residents haggle over organic vegetables, dried chilies, and local yak cheese (Chhurpi).
