Punakha

Punakha is the ancient capital of Bhutan and remains the winter seat of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot). Situated at a lower altitude of 4,000 feet, the valley enjoys a subtropical climate, making it a lush, year-round destination famous for its terraced rice fields, orange orchards, and the confluence of the two most significant rivers in the kingdom.

The Architectural Masterpiece: Punakha Dzong

• Pungtang Dewa chhenbi Phodrang: Known as the “Palace of Great Happiness,” this is widely considered the most beautiful Dzong in Bhutan. It stands majestically at the junction of the Pho Chhu (Father) and Mo Chhu (Mother) rivers. In spring, the lilac-colored jacaranda trees surrounding the whitewashed walls create a surreal, postcard-perfect scene.

• The Kuenrey (Assembly Hall): Inside the Dzong, the grand assembly hall features massive statues of Buddha, Guru Rinpoche, and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, with intricate murals depicting the life of the Enlightened One.

Spiritual & Scenic Landmarks

• Chimi Lhakhang (The Fertility Temple): A pleasant 20-minute walk through yellow paddy fields and the village of Sopsokha leads to this 15th-century temple. Dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, the “Divine Madman,” it is a site of deep folk legend and is visited by couples from around the world seeking blessings for children.

• Punakha Suspension Bridge: One of the longest and oldest suspension bridges in Bhutan, draped in colorful prayer flags. It offers a thrilling walk over the Po Chhu river and provides a spectacular vantage point for photographing the Dzong from a distance.

• Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten: Reached via a hike through rice terraces, this golden-topped pagoda-style stupa was built to bring peace and harmony to the world. The view from the top tier, overlooking the winding Mo Chhu river valley, is arguably the best in the region.

• River Rafting: The calm waters of the Mo Chhu are perfect for scenic “float” rafting, while the Pho Chhu offers more spirited Class III+ rapids for adventure seekers. Both routes provide a unique perspective of the valley’s palaces and temples.

• Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang: A nunnery and meditation center perched on a ridge, featuring a massive bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara and offering sweeping views of the Punakha and Wangduephodrang valleys.
