Dholavira is a spectacular archaeological site located on Khadir Bet island in the Great Rann of Kutch. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it represents one of the most influential and well-preserved urban settlements of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization (Harappan Culture), dating back over 4,500 years.
Sophisticated Water Management: Dholavira is world-renowned for its incredible water conservation system. In a region with scanty rainfall, ancient engineers built massive stone-cut reservoirs, sophisticated channels, and filter tanks to harvest every drop of water—an engineering marvel that remains a study for modern urban planners.
The World’s Earliest Signboard: One of the most fascinating discoveries here is a “signboard” consisting of ten large stone symbols. It is considered one of the oldest examples of a public display of writing in the world.
Tripartite City Planning: Unlike other Harappan sites, Dholavira followed a unique three-tier layout: the Citadel (the fortified royal quarters), the Middle Town, and the Lower Town, all enclosed within massive stone walls.
