Diu is a sun-drenched island off the southern coast of Gujarat’s Kathiawar peninsula. A former Portuguese colony, this tiny enclave offers a unique atmosphere where Mediterranean-style architecture, whitewashed churches, and massive stone forts meet the golden sands of the Arabian Sea. It is a place of “Susegad”—a relaxed, laid-back pace of life that is rare to find elsewhere.
The Fortress (Praça de Diu): Built in 1535, this massive limestone structure is surrounded by the sea on three sides. Walking along its ramparts, you’ll see ancient iron cannons still pointed toward the horizon. The view of the lighthouse and the Panikota fort (a former prison in the middle of the sea) is especially dramatic at high tide.
Naida Caves: Located just outside the fort walls, these are spectacular natural rock formations carved out by the Portuguese for building materials. The interlocking caverns and sunlight filtering through the jagged openings create a surreal, ethereal atmosphere—a favorite for photographers and film-makers.
St. Paul’s Church: A masterpiece of Baroque architecture, known for its intricate wood carvings and voluted facade. It remains one of the finest examples of Jesuit architecture in India.
St. Thomas Church Museum: This de-consecrated church now serves as a local museum, housing an impressive collection of stone inscriptions, wooden statues, and artifacts that tell the story of Diu’s colonial past.
Diu Town: The narrow, winding streets of the main town are lined with colorful houses featuring wooden balconies and tiled roofs, reminiscent of a small European seaside village.
Nagoa Beach: The most popular beach on the island, famous for its unique horseshoe shape and the rare Hoka Trees (Hyphaene thebaica), brought here by Portuguese sailors from Africa. The calm waters are perfect for swimming and a variety of water sports.
Ghoghla Beach: A pristine, “Blue Flag” certified beach known for its cleanliness and golden sand. It is much quieter than Nagoa, offering a peaceful environment for long walks and sunbathing.
Jallandhar Beach: Located on a hillock near the town, this beach is home to a small temple and offers some of the best sunset views on the island.
Chakratirth Beach: A rocky beach known for its “Sunset Point” and a beautifully landscaped open-air auditorium.
The Hoka Forests: Diu is the only place in India where you will find these branching palm trees. Their fan-shaped leaves and unusual silhouettes give the island a distinct, tropical character.
INS Khukri Memorial: A tribute to the Indian Navy frigate sunk during the 1971 war. The memorial is perched on a hill overlooking the sea, offering a place for reflection and panoramic coastal views.
Seafood & Culinary Fusion: Being a coastal enclave with a colonial history, Diu offers a fantastic array of fresh seafood, often prepared with a blend of Gujarati spices and Portuguese influences.
