Porbandar, the “White City” of Gujarat, is a historic port town nestled along the edge of the Arabian Sea. • The Ancestral Home: This 3-story blue-walled haveli is where Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in 1869. Walking through its narrow corridors, you can see the exact spot marked with a swastika where the Mahatma was born.

• The Memorial Temple: Adjacent to the home is the E-shaped Kirti Mandir, built by the industrialist Nanji Kalidas Mehta. The structure is 79 feet high, symbolizing the 79 years of Gandhi’s life, and contains 79 lamps representing his age at the time of his martyrdom.

• The Museum: The complex houses a vast collection of photographs, letters, and personal belongings of Gandhi and Kasturba, providing a deeply personal look at the “Father of the Nation.”

Spiritual & Mythological Roots

• Sudama Temple: Porbandar is believed to be the ancient city of Ashmavati, the home of Sudama, the devoted friend of Lord Krishna. The 13th-century Sudama Temple is the only one in the world dedicated to him, featuring a beautiful maze carved into the floor that pilgrims navigate to symbolize the journey toward liberation.

• Harsiddhi Mata Temple: Perched on a hill overlooking the sea at Miyani, this ancient temple is dedicated to the guardian goddess of sailors. Legend says the original temple was built by Krishna himself.

• Bharat Mandir: A unique museum that houses a massive relief map of India on its floor and displays statues of heroes from Indian mythology and history.

• Chowpatty Beach: A pristine, wide stretch of sand perfect for sunset strolls. The beach is lined with ancient stone structures and offers a stunning view of the Porbandar lighthouse and the deep blue Arabian Sea.
