Somnath, located on the edge of the Saurashtra coast, is home to the first of the twelve holy Jyotirlings of Lord Shiva. Known as “The Eternal Shrine,” the temple has a legendary history of being destroyed and rebuilt seven times, standing today as a powerful symbol of Indian resilience, architectural splendor, and deep-rooted faith.
The Shore Temple: Built in the grand Chalukya style, the temple’s honey-colored sandstone glows against the turquoise backdrop of the Arabian Sea. The shikhara (spire) rises to 155 feet, topped by a massive 10-ton stone kalash.
The Baan Stambh (Arrow Pillar): Located on the temple sea-wall, this ancient pillar indicates a straight line over the ocean to the South Pole, with no landmass in between—a testament to the incredible astronomical and geographical knowledge of ancient India.
