Thimphu

Thimphu is the world’s only capital city without traffic lights, where white-gloved policemen direct the flow of vehicles with rhythmic, hand-gestured elegance. Sitting at 7,659 feet, it is the pulsating heart of modern Bhutan, offering a unique blend of ancient monastic traditions and a burgeoning contemporary culture.

The Spiritual Skyline

• Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point): One of the largest sitting Buddha statues in the world, cast in bronze and gilded in gold. It houses 125,000 smaller Buddha statues within its chest. The site offers the most spectacular panoramic view of the entire Thimphu valley, especially at sunrise.

• National Memorial Chorten: Built in 1974 in memory of the Third King, this stupa is the focus of daily worship for Thimphu’s residents. You will see elderly locals circumambulating the shrine in a clockwise direction, spinning large prayer wheels and chanting mantras.

• Tashichho Dzong: The “Fortress of the Glorious Religion” is the seat of the government and the summer residence of the monastic body. Its massive white walls and triple-tiered golden roofs are best viewed at dusk when the entire structure is illuminated by floodlights.

Living Heritage & Arts

• Motithang Takin Preserve: Home to the Takin, Bhutan’s national animal. Legend says this “bee-stung cow” was created by the Divine Madman by joining a goat’s head to a cow’s body. The preserve is a peaceful pine-forested area perfect for a morning walk.

• Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory: Witness the ancient art of making Deh-sho paper from the bark of the Daphne bush. You can even try your hand at the traditional straining process and buy exquisite journals and stationery.

• National Institute for Zorig Chusum: Often called the “Painting School,” where students undergo years of training in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts, including thangka painting, woodcarving, and embroidery.

Urban Exploration & Dining

• Norzin Lam: The main artery of Thimphu, lined with cafes, bookstores, and handicraft emporiums. It is the best place to experience the city’s modern side.

• The Postcard Dewa: A high-end boutique retreat tucked away in a forest clearing just outside the city, offering absolute privacy and “Mountain Therapy” wellness programs.
