Hodka is a mesmerizing “Art Village” located in the Banni grasslands of Kutch. The name itself is derived from the Gujarati word Hodi (boat), as the village is believed to have been settled by Halaypotra pastoralists who arrived centuries ago. Today, it stands as a living museum of rural Kutch, where every home is a gallery of hand-painted mud art and every courtyard a workshop for world-class embroidery.
Circular Earth Dwellings: Hodka is famous for its Bhungas—traditional circular mud houses with conical thatched roofs. This indigenous design is naturally earthquake-resistant and climate-controlled, staying remarkably cool during the scorching desert days and warm during the chilly Kutch nights.
Lippan Kaam (Mud-Mirror Art): The interior walls of these Bhungas are decorated by local women using a mixture of clay and camel dung, inlaid with thousands of tiny mirrors. The resulting geometric and floral patterns glisten in the lamplight, creating a magical, starry effect inside the homes.
Exquisite Leather Work: Hodka is the premier hub for Kutch’s traditional leather craft. Local artisans use hand-punched techniques to create intricately decorated mirrors, fans, footwear (Mojdis), and bags, often embellished with colorful silk tassels and copper bells.
Banni Embroidery: The women of the Meghwal and Halaypotra communities are masters of the “Kambhira” and “Nerana” embroidery styles. Unlike other regions, Hodka’s needlework is characterized by its density and the use of vibrant, contrasting primary colors that stand out against the earthy desert tones.
The Village Resort: Hodka is home to the award-winning Shaam-e-Sarhad (Sunset on the Border) Rural Resort. Owned and operated by the village community, it offers travelers a chance to stay in authentic Bhungas or luxury tents, providing a high-comfort gateway to the rural Kutchi lifestyle.
