Dwarka

Dwarka, situated on the western tip of the Saurashtra peninsula, is one of the most sacred outposts of Hindu pilgrimage. As the ancient capital of Lord Krishna’s kingdom and a key site of the Char Dham and Sapta Puri circuits, Dwarka is a place where deep spiritual traditions meet the rugged beauty of the Arabian Sea coast.

The Spiritual Epicenter: Jagat Mandir

• Dwarkadhish Temple: This 2,500-year-old architectural marvel, also known as the Jagat Mandir, features a majestic five-storied limestone spire supported by 72 pillars. The temple is famous for the Abhotiya Brahmins’ ritual of changing the massive 52-yard flag (Dhvaj) five times a day, visible from miles away.

• Gomti Ghat: Before entering the temple through the Swarg Dwar (Gate to Heaven), pilgrims take a holy dip at the confluence of the Gomti River and the Arabian Sea. The ghat is lined with smaller shrines and is especially vibrant during the morning and evening aartis.

• Sudama Setu: A modern suspension bridge over the Gomti River that connects the mainland to the Panchnad Tirth. It offers a panoramic view of the temple and the sea, and across the bridge, you can explore the five sweet-water wells believed to have been created by the Pandavas.

New Horizons: Sudarshan Setu & Bet Dwarka

• Sudarshan Setu (Signature Bridge): Recently inaugurated in 2024, this is India’s longest cable-stayed bridge. It connects mainland Okha to the island of Bet Dwarka, replacing the traditional ferry ride with a stunning 2.3-km sea link. The bridge is an artistic feat, featuring walkways adorned with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and images of Lord Krishna.

• Bet Dwarka Island: Believed to be the actual residence of Lord Krishna, this island is home to the ancient Dwarkadhish Mukhya Mandir. The island is also a hub for marine life; during low tide, you can spot coral reefs and a variety of sea birds along its white-sand shores.

Coastal Wonders & Blue Flag Serenity

• Shivrajpur Beach: Located just 12 km from Dwarka, this is one of India’s prestigious Blue Flag certified beaches. Known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sands, it is a premier spot for Scuba Diving and Snorkeling, where you can explore vibrant underwater corals and occasionally spot dolphins.

• Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple: Perched on a hillock in the sea, this temple becomes an island during high tide. It is one of the most peaceful spots in Dwarka, offering a front-row seat to spectacular sunsets over the Arabian Sea.

• Nageshwar Jyotirlinga: A short drive from the main city, this is one of the 12 self-existent Jyotirlingas in the world. It features a massive 80-foot tall statue of Lord Shiva that can be seen from a great distance.

• Kathiyawadi Thali: A visit to Dwarka is incomplete without a traditional meal featuring Bajra no Rotlo, Vagbarelo Bajra, and the famous Gujarati Kadhi.

• Local Delicacies: Indulge in the classic duo of Fafda-Jalebi for breakfast, or try the spicy Kutchi Dabeli and Khaman Dhokla from the local markets near the temple.

• Gopi Talav: This sacred lake is famous for its yellow “Gopi Chandan” (sandal-like clay), which devotees use for tilaks, believing it to be the soil where the Gopis merged with the earth.
